We have been learning about rainforests this term. We have researched animals and written Informative Texts. Year 5/6J have learnt so much from each other's presentations.Please read these and leave a comment.

Brazilian Wandering Spider

Phoneutri Fria is the Greek name for the Brazilian Wandering Spider. Their nickname is
 the banana spider.
Where are they found?
The Brazilian Wandering Spiders are found in Costa Rica, Columbia, Peru, Brazil and Paraguay. Brazilian Wandering Spiders are mostly found in tropical rainforest.

 
Interesting Facts                                                                                                                           


Brazilian Wandering Spiders are the most venomous spiders in the world. Brazilian Wandering Spiders appeared in the Guinness World Record in 2013 for the most venomous spider. The Brazilian Wandering Spider’s venom contains a potent neurotoxin known as PhTx3.

Appearance

They have a leg span of 6 inches. They can grow up to have a leg span of 13 to 15 inches. They can grow up to 17 to 48 mm.

What Do They Eat?

Brazilian Wandering Spiders eat crickets, small lizards, mice and other small animals. Brazilian Wandering Spiders go hunting at night.

Mating


The eggs of the Brazilian Wandering Spider.
Female spiders can be picky when choosing a mate. They only attack when they have mated.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     


Enemies

The Brazilian Wandering Spider has only one enemy and that animal is the Pompilid wasp. The wasp stings the spider which paralyses the spider but does not kill it.

Poison Dart Frog

Appearance


This is where the frog is found.
 Poison dart frogs are also known as poison arrow frogs. They are part of the family Dendrobatidae. They are highly venomous frogs that are about 2.5cm small. They have an amazing colouring that varies from yellow, gold, copper, red and green. These amazingly brilliant colours warn other animals to back away.


Habitat

These frogs live in Central and South America. Most of these frogs live on the forest floor.

Reproduction These frogs are Amphibians and lay their eggs on leaves. When the baby hatches it is carried on one of the parent’s back.

               Most of the time the baby gets fed all the infertile eggs after it is born.

Food

Poison dart frogs eat small insects like ants, spiders, crustaceans and tiny water animals.

Enemies


This frog has one enemy which is the leimadphis epinepheleus. The leimadphis epinepheleus is a snake that has developed a resistance to the frogs poison. 

Behaviour

Unlike most other frogs the poison dart frog is mostly found in the daytime.  They prefer the company of two or more frogs.

Interesting facts

·        An amount smaller than a grain of salt of its poison can kill a human.

·        Its poison can cause paralysis or death.

·        The poison dart frog is the size of a man’s thumbnail.

·        They live for 3 to 5 years.

·        One frog carries enough poison to kill about 100 people.

·        People used to use its poison on arrows to hunt. That’s how they got their name.

·        The golden poison dart frogs are the most deadly.

The Cassowary


Appearance

Cassowaries are large flightless birds. They have a horny helmet called a casque, a blue or orange neck and head with two long wattles handing on its neck. It has a huge black body, with thick grey legs and three toes on each leg. The inner toe has a 12cm claw-like spike used for defence.

Habitat

There are three types of cassowaries; two are in New Guinea and one in Northern Queensland. They all live in tropical rainforests.


 

Diet




They normally eat fruits from trees and seed. They can also eat small mammals, dead bird, eggs, frogs and snails. Cassowaries can eat more than 238 species of plants.

Predators

Cassowaries don’t have any natural predators, their only predator is people. Only their eggs have predators, which are lizards and white rats.

Behaviour

The Southern Cassowaries are very good swimmers and runners. All cassowaries can listen to slow moves and then crash into them at the speed of 50km/hrs.

Interesting Fact

·        Female cassowaries are larger than males.

·        There are only 1500 cassowaries left in the world.

·        The three types of cassowary are the Dwarf cassowary, Northern cassowary, Southern cassowary.

·        More than 80% of its habitat has been cleared over the last 100 years.

·        The southern cassowary is the world’s third largest bird and the second heaviest.

·        Cassowaries are the world’s largest forest bird and second-heaviest it’s only lighter than the ostrich and is the third tallest the ostrich and the emu are taller.

Toco Toucan

Toco toucan is the most common toucan you would find.They are not very good at flying so they hop and walk.The toco toucans bill are not very strong.The bright colours of  a toucan gives them camouflage in colourful rainforests.They are the largest of all toucans.Their bills are made out of keratin.

                                                                   Appearance

Toco toucan measures 63.5cm in length. It has a bright orange beak about 16cm.It weighs between 592 and760g.                                         

Habbit

The toco toucan is native to South America also they live in tropical rainforests, Savannas and Shrubland.They also are located in central Caribbean.They live in hollow trees. 

 

Diet

They are omnivorous. They eat various types of fruit they also eat insects or lizards.Toco toucans eat nuts,berries,seeds and eggs.

The toco toucan has  numbers of enemies in the jungle humans,large birds and wild cats. Weasels,snakes and rats eat there eggs.

You would commonly find it flying across rivers. You can also find them in the canopy and the understory or ground. There are many use of its bill feeding and defence

The toco toucan is a third of the three biggest toucans. They in flock 6 to 12 birds. Its closest relative is the woodpecker.
