Letters from the goldfields by Ishan and lucifer

Ballarat Goldfields

Ballarat  P.O.

30th July 1854

Dearest Father

I have arrived at the Ballarat Goldfields safe and sound. I wish I could come home but I don't have any money. I travelled on a long journey to get to the goldfields. It is so far from England. I am in the

Ballarat goldfields which are in Victoria, Australia. I was so far away from the goldfields when I arrived in Melbourne. By the time I arrived I was worn out.

You are very lucky to be back in England. Over here we eat mainly damper (a type of bread) and mutton and there is a short supply of clean water. I don't remember the last time I ate any meat. This is because meat is highly unaffordable. Whenever I am thinking about meat I think about you making one of your delicious lamb meals.

I have to carry all my possessions whereever I go because people can't be trusted. Because of the robbery on the goldfields people travel by horse, bullock or by walking with a wheelbarrow full of possessions.

While you are warm and cozy by the fire I am in a tent that doesn't give any heat. I miss sitting by the fire with you.

I don't think I am going to find much gold because of the amount of people over here. I haven't found much gold I have been working from dawn to dusk.

I don't have much money because I had to spend most of it on a miner's right. A miner's right is a licence that permits you to dig for gold. I think that miners shouldn't have to pay for a

miner's right.

I miss you father. I hope to find some gold so that I can return home.

Your loving son,

Ishan

                                                                                      30th July 1852

Dear Mother

I arrived safely at the Ophir Goldfields. Life here is very cramped and I am soaking wet and shivering to the bone from the cold. At the moment I have only found one ounce of gold and I am wondering how long it will be before the bushrangers steal it. Bushrangers are thieves who live in the bush and ambush people on their way to town and steal their possessions.

I manly eat damper and mutton. Damper is a type of bread made by mixing flour and water and cooking it over the fire. I am sick of tea. It is all I can drink because the water is full of diseases and must be boiled over the fire before I can drink it.

The troopers are everywhere you look. We have to have to have a miner’s right to dig for gold which cost 30 shillings. That is so stupid because we don’t have any money and can’t dig for gold. Luckily I have a miner’s licence.

I miss you and the comforts of home and I want to be back before I catch any diseases like typliod.

 Your loving son,
Lucifer

Bathurst Goldfields

Bathurst P.O

Dear mother and father,

I am writing to you from Bathurst goldfields. I have arrived safely and haven't found any gold yet. Life here is hard and I miss you very much.

I only eat damper which is bread because it is the only thing I can afford. The meat is far too expensive. I wish I could be at home with you, I miss your cooking so much especially dad's lamb roast. I drool just thinking about it. Before I started mining for gold I had to buy a miners right which was thirty shillings.

The trip here was dangerous because bush rangers would rob miners but luckily I wasn't one of them. At the moment I'm living in a tent, tomorrow I am going to make a little hut out of bark and wood. It is very cold and nearly every day it rains. I heard rumours that people are getting very sick and dying from dysentery and typhoid, also that the meat is stolen off farmers.

There is a lot of fighting over claims which is when someone takes over someone else's space they are mining. When I first came here there were no shops but a couple of days ago they built a general store. The men here are jealous of the Chinese men because they work nonstop and never give up, whereas when we can't find gold we give up.

I have to be careful that I always have my miners right with me because if I don't have it and the troopers come and ask me for my miners right I will be sent to jail. I can't trust any not even the people I know from the neighbourhood because if I find gold they will take my spot, or even steal my gold. On Sunday no one mines on the field for there is a rule saying you can't. Today they are building a theatre for passing performers to entertain us. I can't believe a week as gone past already I guess time flies when your searching for gold.

I miss you lots and hopefully I will find my fortune and come home to London as soon as possible.

From your darling son,

John

                                                       30th July 1852

Dear Mother,

I arrived safely here in Ballarat. Life up here is very hard there is a lot of violence and everything is expensive

I had to buy a miner's licence which cost 30 shillings and I've only found a small amount of gold. We have to buy a miner's license which I think is unfair  because it gives permission to find gold.

I eat damper, damper which is  a simple bread made from flour, salt and water and cooked over an open campfire. I only eat damper because everything else is too expensive.

People travel by horse or bullock, or just walk. Everyone takes the gold with them because there is lots of stealing here in the goldfields and you can't trust anyone.

I really wish I could go back home and have those delicious dinners you made for me. I really miss you.

Your loving daughter,

 Melissa

The Lighthouse

One stormy night in the small shoddy village of Magile in Sweden. The whole village except the lighthouse keeper was having a party to celebrate New Year. Meanwhile the lighthouse keeper was writing in his dairy and was infuriated by the noise of the party and slammed the window shut.

At that very moment the power blacked out through the whole village. The lighthouse keeper noticed that the light was of at once, but he didn’t know why.  He hurriedly grabbed his toolbox and rushed up the rickety, spiral, creaking staircase.

He reached the top puffing and panting. He wasn’t used to sprinting and he put his toolbox down and checked the gears. None of them were moving.

“That’s odd; he thought the gears always run like clockwork.”

Then he thought it must be the bulb so he hurriedly climbed the old wooden ladder that led to the observation platform that held the bulb. He opened the hatch and the wind bit him instantly. He chattered so hard that he thought his teeth would fall out. He clambered up the last few rungs and scuttled over and opened the magnifying lens and checked the bulb. As he was checking it he heard the ear-splitting noise of a foghorn of an incoming ship. Noise hit him like thunder and so did the dread of what would happen if he didn’t fix the light.  He hurriedly lifted the bulb to check the circuitry underneath the bulb, but he was in such a rush that he didn’t look where he was going. He tripped over backwards the bulb shattered beyond repair. He skedaddled down the stairs and threw open the door. He was surprised and shocked to see the villagers strolling up the steep hill path to the lighthouse.

The villagers had also heard the foghorn of the ship and noticed the lighthouse was off and were carrying oil lamps they were going to make a human lighthouse, but they had to work fast because the ship was only a minute away from crashing into the jagged rocks. The lighthouse keeper hurriedly ordered them on the platforms of the lighthouse and around the lighthouse. The ship turned away in the nick of time and they actually heard the ship scrape the rocks.

The Black Hole

“Get the latest news…!” a man in the LCD TV announced. Hi my name is Ash I am a 12 year old boy. Yesterday for me was a hectic day and I will never forget it.

My house had been robbed by The Wolf Gang. They were the most wanted criminals in England. Everybody knew about them but not their secret weapon of doom.

My mum and I had to run some errands for my aunt. This was the biggest mistake we ever made. Somehow the Wolf Gang heard us and decided to rob our house. Even though he had locked our house 10 times! Still they managed to brake in.

When we got back from shopping our house looked normal. There was a TV, a computer, three beds, and a bathroom. Everything was normal …….. Except all my mum’s secret money had vanished!!!! How? We had locked our house ten times and all the windows were closed. My mom only had 10 dollars left, and on that note was the sign of the head of Wolf Gang. His name was Jayden aka   Wolf Father. He had established the Wolf Gang.

I decided to go and find the Wolf Gang. I knew I would fail, but I had to do it, I had to do it for my mum. I bet you are now thinking how would a 12 year old boy,  like me pull of such thing. Well I’ll tell you. My dad was a detective, until he died. So detective blood ran through my family veins. I started off at our house I suspected that if the Wolf Gang could hear us that meant they lived nearby. I decided to check the abandoned house that was next to our place.

I checked in the house. The door opened. I had never felt that scared before in my life. I had gone inside. There was only one window. I could see some people. They had a black circle with them. I was looking when suddenly a man saw me…..

The Black Hole
It was just a normal day. The sun was shining and the children were playing at the local park. That night when I as watching the news with my friends Lucy and Lauren, they announced that in China, America and England a black hole had appeared from nowhere and that scientists did not know what it was or where it came from.

I first thought that someone could just be playing a trick so I did not worry about it. The next day when I woke up I looked out of my window and saw a black hole up in the sky. First I thought that my brain was playing a trick on me but then when I asked my mum if she could see the black hole. She told me that she could. I was so scared that I did not know what to do so I ran over to Lucy's house. When I arrived at her house she was so terrified that she had forgotten her own name. After a while, when we were talking about the black hole, she told me that the one in China had grown bigger.

Later that day when I was watching the news they announced that a group of scientists was trying to find out where the black hole had come from. The scientists assured the public that they would get rid of it. I was so happy to hear the great news that I called Lucy and Lauren immediately. That night I could not sleep because of what they had said on the news. I was so happy

A few weeks later the black hole was still in the sky. It was not getting bigger or smaller. When I was leaving the house that day for school, I realised that the black hole had disappeared. It was gone. When I was at school everyone was talking about the black hole and how no one knew what happened to it, even the scientists. Since then, we still don't know what happened to the black hole, but everyone is glad that it is gone for good.

The Black Hole

I was watching an amazing cartoon when an advertisement came up. I whined “Why do these silly, annoying advertisements come up when I am in the middle of an awesome cartoon?”

I saw an advertisement saying that there was a new movie in the cinemas. I really craved to see that movie with Tom who was my best friend. I had Tom on the line and told him about the movie. I asked him “Do you want to watch it today with me?”

He exclaimed “Sure.”

I told him that I was going to go to his house in the afternoon and then we’d go to the cinemas.

That afternoon I headed off to Tom’s house. He seemed even more excited than I was. He was so excited that his hands were trembling. We both told Tom’s mother where we were going when I suddenly remembered that we needed money to buy tickets. We begged Tom’s mother so much for money that she was forced to give us some. We shouted excitedly “Thank you!”

We had just started off for the cinemas when something unfamiliar happened. A big black hole appeared and it was blocking the footpath. “What are we going to do?” I asked Tom.

Before he could respond we both felt a hand push. I turned around but it was too late.  We were in the black hole. I caught a glimpse and I thought that I saw Jayden who was the meanest bully at our school.

“Great!” I shouted out loudly “If it wasn’t for Jayden then we wouldn’t be here.” Exclaimed Tom.

That’s when we saw lots of people staring at us. They looked just like the people in their dimension. “Where are we?” I asked.

“You are in the future.” Another voice exclaimed.

That is when I saw another Tom and as well as myself. In fact I saw everyone who lived in our town, including that repulsive Jayden.

“We’re going to be here for a long while, Tom.” I exclaimed. Then I realised that we were in the future so we could see what would happen in the future. That’s when we saw a sign saying “MISSING CHILDREN!” “That’s us!” exclaimed Tom.

There was a mysterious door. I asked one of the towns people “What is this door for?”

He replied “I can’t tell you that”

“Why?” I responded. Then he told me to mind my own business.

“How are we going to return to the past? The other Tom and I overheard us and told us that the only way to go back to the past was by going through the door that we were talking about earlier. Then we exclaimed “Thank you.” Suddenly an odd man stopped us but the other Tom and I stopped him. Suddenly an odd man stopped us but the other Tom and I stopped him. We exclaimed to them “Thank you and bye.”

When we got back into our dimension we saw posters saying “MISSING CHILDREN!” We both wondered how many days had passed. We then decided to both go home and we exclaimed “Bye.”

When I arrived home, I hugged my parents and I found myself in front of the TV so I watched some TV but in my mind I was wondering “Could that really have been Jayden as I thought?”

The Black Hole

“Oh boy” mumbled Michael

I have to go to my dad’s work, boring. Just then we jumped out of the car “whoa” announced Michael excitedly what a spectacular building I shouting to my dad “come on lets go”

I raced up the stairs, down the hall and into my dad’s office. He asked me to print something out on the photocopier I walked slowly to the printer feeling nervous I saw many people working. When I arrived at the printer a black circle came out on the paper I put my hand in on the paper it was actually a black hole. I placed down onto down onto the desk. I stood back and took a big jump into it. I was in there for a while.

When I eventually came out of the hole I found myself in a cave “oh my god” I was actually in a gold mine. I filled my hat with as much gold as I could. I raced to the black hole. Just then a goblin chased after me. I ran as fast as a cheetah towards the black hole.

I jumped in “phew” I was back at my dad’s work. It was time to go home. What a story I’ll have to tell when I arrive home.

The Black Hole
The sky was still bright blue as we entered the big, colourful mouth of Luna Park. I wanted to ride the Mouse. I was very eager to sit on the electric, strawberry pink car. We would have been on the green Mouse five minutes ago but I was so adamant that we waited. People had said there was something peculiar about the electric, strawberry pink car and I wanted to find out.
Lucy sat in the Mouse car when she gave me a fierce look. “It better be worth this girly car”! She moaned. I hoped so too, if there was nothing funny about this car, I was in big trouble. I dropped down onto the seat when the ride had not even started and I began to sink into the seat! Seconds later I realised I was sinking into a black hole.
The next thing I knew was that I was covered in foamy sponge. It was so hard to breathe. Then I realised that the “peculiar” thing was a black hole in the middle of the seat! I started to panic when Lucy fell in with a bump. At least I wasn’t in trouble now that she was experiencing the “peculiar “thing.
The hole was enormous, we couldn’t get out and the sponge was covering all the black. Lucy and I decided to rip the sponge and touch all the black we saw so we could identify the black hole. This sounded like a brilliant plan, but would it work? After searching for a long time felt a steering wheel. My hand must have come out of the hole.
I told Lucy to hold my left arm while I gripped on tightly to the steering wheel with my right. I climbed out and pulled Lucy out. I sat on her lap so we would not fall in again. This ride was definitely peculiar! We then stepped out of the seat just as the ride finished. Excellent timing!
